PRODUCTS AND DESIGN

  • Gong-bi painting is the technique of brushwork that it used for traditional hand-painted silk wallpaper since 18th century. The paint is similar to gouache, the silk is backed with rice paper done in the traditional method, the silk is primed before our artisans begin their works of art.

  • Chinoiserie wallpaper often depicts exotic elements of the Orient through Western eyes. Panoramic, scenic wallpaper of romantic, exotic landscapes, oriental villages, flora and fauna, birds and butterflies, imperial court and garden scenes are often the subject. This craze for everything Chinese came from Marco Polo's first account of the Cathay. Back then with limited access to the true China, it became sort of a fantasy feeding a fantasy: figurines with pagoda hats, palm trees, pineapples, anything exotic really that has nothing to do with the real Orient. Chinoiserie decorative arts began in late 17th century and is still incredibly popular today.

  • Maintain with gentle care, avoid abrasion, gentle brushing with feather brush for dusting is sufficient.

  • Cloisonné tiles are a unique product of LALA CURIO. Handmade in the methodology of the imperial craft Cloisonné, each wire is bent into shape by hand creating the pattern, the cloisons are filled in with pigments layer by layer creating vivid, gradual gradations. The tiles are on a waterproof substrate, lightweight and easy to install.

  • All LALA CURIO products are made-to-order. Whilst we have a large archive of artwork one can choose from, we are delighted to add bespoke elements into our wallpaper, narrating our client's personal story through our wallpaper.

ABOUT THE FOUNDER AND LEGACY

  • 3-generations savoir-faire in ancient Chinese crafts, Laura Cheung Wolf's grandmother specialised in cloisonné, an imperial craft used only in the palace once upon a time. Her grandfather had a rosewood furniture atelier. Laura is committed to continue the family legacy and reinvent precious ancient lost crafts.

  • Our goal is to make traditional grandmother crafts accessible and exciting again, not only to our consumers but to our artisans, for them to see great prospects of what's ahead, to carry on their rare art form for future generations. You will see today the glorious days of 18th century Chinoiserie brought back to you in a relevant, modernised form through the eyes of LALA CURIO.
